The Junior Instructor Leadership program is geared towards youth, ages 14-17, learning the skills it takes to be an effective sailing instructor.
This course will focus on developing the traits of a quality leader and instructor in both sailing and other walks of life. Jr. Instructors will also learn how to safely operate a powerboat in a coaching scenario as well as proper docking, care, and general use.
Students will spend the mornings assisting lead instructors, learning how to effectively create lesson plans, and coaching sailors out on the water. The afternoon will be spent improving sailing skills by having daily sailing practice or helping teach in a boat with students participating in the Club420 race camp. In these afternoon sessions Junior Instructors will continue to improve their technical sailing skills.
Jr. Instructors will also have opportunity to compete in the Friday TCYS regattas throughout the metro area, depending on instructor availability. These regattas have a $25 registration fee. To qualify for the course participants need to have taken at least 3 weeks of a club 420 sailing course and be in good standing.
JIs who would like to learn powerboat skills must pass the NASBLA boating course. Once 18, Jr. instructors in good standing will have priority in lead sailing instructor hiring process.
Junior Instructors can commit to one to four weeks during the summer. These weeks do not need to be consecutive, but JIs must commit to a full week.
